Around and around, increasing speed with every pump of the pedal. Warm, wet hands make the first contact with the shapeless mass on the wheel. Pressing, pushing, smoothly moving His hands upward. He can see where he wants to go; what the end product will be.
But to the outsider, it's a blur of motion, water, spinning, and confusion. At times it even begins to wobble or crack as The Potter continues His hands-on orchestration. You begin to wonder if it's going to actually turn out ok, but He never stops. He never sits back to wonder what direction to take next. The wheel keeps spinning and His hands move over the imperfection so quickly, so purposefully that you wonder if it wasn't already part of the plan.
When The Potter finally takes His hand away to reach for a tool or more water, you begin to see it; what He is making. It's not what you had pictured it would be. It's as if, mid-spin, The Potter switched designs, or added to it. As the one with the skills and master plans, He has the ability to do that, but not us. He knew exactly when to apply pressure and when to let off, when to pull and when to push.
He is The Master Potter, and we are the clay.
Jeremiah 18:1-4
